#1 - Kaitlin - "Mom, I love you up to Heaven, the moon, the stars and all the way to Canada!" (The first ones are pretty typical. These comments from her started after many readings of "Guess How Much I Love You"; however, when she through 'Canada' in there the other day, that was quite unexpected! It was followed by "Mom, how far is Canada?")
#2 - Kaitlin - "Did you know that some people have vampire teeth? Really, they do." (No idea where this came from, but she is quite convinced.)
#3 - My Dad - "It's like pouring water on a rock...nothing soaks in." (He said this in response to my trying to teach them how to use the Internet after recently getting a connection of their own at home.)

CHA Winter 2007...Fancy Pants, Dream Street, and Mustard Moon, oh my!
Well, CHA Winter 2007 starts this weekend. For you dedicated scrappers out there, I know there is no explanation needed, but for those of you that are not CHA (Craft & Hobby Association) hosts HUGE trade shows a couple times a year that last for DAYS and this is when all the new product lines are introduced. Well, the next show starts this week in Anaheim, CA...I was able to find some 'sneak peaks' of some of some of the products coming out and definitely see some that I like...no surprise there!
Fancy Pants...one of my current favorites has several new lines coming out, but it looks like Floral Chic and Aged Florals are going to be my favorites there...
There is also a new company (or at least one that I hadn't heard of before) which had some really great looking papers. So, I guess I'll have to be adding another manufacturer’s folder to my paper storage box!! The company is Dream Street and I believe they have numerous new lines coming out, but the ones that I know of that really stuck out to me were 'A Letter from Julia', 'Pompeii', 'Romantique', and 'Unique Boutique'.
Three other manufacturers that had items that stood out to me were American Crafts with their 'A la Carte' line, Cherry Arte's 'Kitty Lou' line and some papers by Mustard Moon.
Lots of great new products will be out soon...only problem with this is that I haven't used up all the great product I got from the last time around...oh well, I've got to stay up to date, right. Booking Through Thursday Meme
- How many unread books do you have in your house, right now? (Your own books, that is--not ones that belong to other family members--and not counting things like school books, if you have them.) Clearly, an estimate will do. I would say that I have AT LEAST 15 unread books on my bookshelf.
- To the best of your recollection, what is the OLDEST unread book in your collection? How long has it been waiting? Probably a book that I bought back in college...hmmm, that would be about 10 years ago...
- Do your TBR books (that's "To Be Read," if you didn't know) haunt you, make you feel guilty that you haven't read them yet? Yes...I have always loved read. From grade school through high school, I was reading something all the time. When I got to college, I only had time to read what I had to (and didn't always like it). Now, since college, I seem to go in spurts...the year before last I read 15 books or so...last year I think I read maybe 2...hopefully this will be another 15 book + year. Right now, I am reading The River King
by Alice Hoffman.

Here's one for Chris...
This picture came from a shoot I did of my sister and her boyfriend back in October...finally got around to scrapping it.

Patterned Paper – Bohemia by My Mind’s Eye
Vellum – Paper Studio
Rub ons – Basic Grey
Brads – Making Memories
Fonts – Porcelain, Paprus
Journaling:
This picture happened by accident…I was taking photos of Lynn & Chris one day and while she and I were examining the pictures we had so far, Chris wandered off and was playing with Kaitlin by this tree. I couldn’t resist taking the shot. It came out dark, but still, I loved it. His stance gives off such a confident, so sure of himself quality…totally Chris.
Comments/Techniques:
As the journaling says, the photo came out dark, but I exagerated it further with a filter in photoshop to enhance the 'mood'. In making the mat for the photo, I wanted to keep some of the design in the brown paper, so I cut along the design for a ‘embellished’ photo mat. I also used a brad to dot the ‘i’ in the title. The title itself is a homemade rub on using MS Word and a transparency.

Dr. Phil's Test
I owe my coworker Rhnissa for today’s entry. She sent me this as a forward today…she LOVES forwards…and I thought it was pretty cool and would share it with all of you. It makes for a VERY long post, but totally worth it…

A Year of My Life: 10,000 photos from my point of view from YouTube
YouTube can be an amazing thing...once you get past all the just plain stupid videos. I found this one today and there is just something very inspiring about it. Maybe it's because one of my goals for the year is to improve my abilities in photography...like being able to shoot in manual and at least have some clue what I am doing and expanding my subjects (in other words taking more photos of things in addition to Kaitlin). As I was watching it, I was thinking:
a) this guy must live in Europe (a little jealous) or have been able to take a years hiatus in Europe (even more jealous)
b) he's a wonderful photographer
c) what a way to sum up a year in your life
d) what would it look life if I did this with a years worth of my photos...would I be satisfied with what it said about my life?
What does it make you think? Other than, "Boy, this is kind of long."

Scrapping 'The Wonderful World of Disney...on Ice"
Kaitlin's been feeling a little under the weather today, so I have been doing some scrapping (and laundry) while she's been snuggling on the couch and watching toons most of the day. She's got a bit of a fever...I hope it isn't going to develop into anything too serious.
So back in early December we went to Disney on Ice with Lynn and Mom. It took me a while to scrap it because I had so many pictures and was having a hard time narrowing them down. I finally did it, but still had a lot. This is probably one of the simplest layouts I've done in a while as far as product goes (it's basically just cardstock and pictures), but there's not room for much else with all those pics!!
Journaling:
In December, Lynnie was able to get us some free tickets to Disney on Ice at the Sioux Falls Arena through her job at Backyard Broadcasting. It probably wouldn’t have been something I would have taken you to otherwise considering Lynnie said tickets run at a minimum of 30 dollars a piece otherwise. It was a VERY cold day and even colder by the time you, me, Grandma Sue and Lynnie headed over to the arena. Obviously, Kailtin loved the show...just look at that grin. What I didn’t expect, though, was that I really enjoyed it, too. It wasn’t quite as ‘cheesy’ as I imagined it would be and the costumes were just beautiful...and watching your excitement throughout the show was definitely half the fun!

Kaitlin's uncertain schooling future...please help!
So, my big personal dilema right now is what to do with Kaitlin next year for school. Currently, she is attending preschool at Sacred Heart - St. Ben's, but we have decided that we will go public next year (nothing against Sacred Heart - she's had a wonderful time so far and has learned SO much).
We have tons of options...here's what I have it narrowed down to: 1) she could go to Jr. Kindergarten at Webster School (only location where this is offered) or 2) she could go directly to Kindergarten. With option 2, we would most like send her to Beadle Elementary as it is the closest to our home and she could feasibly walk/ride her bike as she gets older.
Sadly, this is where my decision making ability seems to end.
Here are my concerns with sending her straight to Kindergarten:
1) She will not turn five until June. This is considered a 'late' birthday and many now recommend for children with late birthdays to wait until the next year for Kindergarten (mainly due to #3).
2) She is so small for her age. Kids that are even only 6 months older than her just seem to tower over her; however, this never seems to bother her, so should I be letting it bother me?
Hmmm....
3) The expectations of 1st graders is SO MUCH higher than what they used to be when you and I went to school...I just want to make sure that she has as good of a foundation as she needs to be successful in school in the future.
4) I seem to have an adversion to believing that my little girl is growing up and could actually be ready for the Kindergarten. (FYI - This should really be listed as reason #1!)
In hopes of trying to make a decision, Kaitlin and I visited Webster Jr. Kindergarten, Kindergarten, Beadle Kindergarten, and Stewart Kindergarten (the last one just for good measure :-)) this week during the Yankton School District 'Experience Kindergarten Week'. Unfortunately, I am no more sure of what to do...all the classrooms were nice...all of the teachers were nice...what to do, what to do.
So, last night I expressed my frustration to Justin and gave him all the options, pros and cons, and asked for his opinion. Without hesitation, he said "She should go to Kindergarten."
"Okay," I said, feeling somewhat relieved that he seemed so sure of himself. "Why do you say that?"
In true Justin form, this is what he said: "Well, it's one less Christmas program we have to sit through."
Ahhhh, how sweet - NOT! He was no help whatsoever!
So, can you help? Mothers, 'involved' fathers, those who know Kaitlin best...what is your vote for Kaitlin - Jr. Kindergarten or Kindergarten?? Let me know what you think! If you didn't already notice the poll box at the top of the left sidebar, please go there now and cast your vote!

Scrapbooking magazine reviews
Yes, I'm a scrapbooking magazine addict! I can admit. Even the mailman knows why I am really rushing out to greet him when I happen to be home from work for lunch when he comes by! :-)
You might have noticed that I added a sidebar list entitled "Best Magazines for Inspiration." If you are thinking about subscribing to a mag, I thought I would share my opinions of each that I subscribe to.
Simple Scrapbooks & Scrapbooks, etc. by Better Homes & Gardens are probably my two favorite subscriptions. My only beef…neither one is a monthly! I just wish I could more of them! SS is a bi-monthly publication and S, etc. publishes eight issues per year. Both are high on inspriration.
Simple Scrapbooks really follows it's name...they focus more on photos and journaling and design rather than a lot of excessive embellishment. It is great for the beginner or the more advanced scrapper. They have 4 main 'sections' in every issue: Use, Learn, Make, and Share. Use tells you about new products and helps you 'get the most' out of the product you have. Learn is the place to find information on fun techniques and design. Make offer step-by-step instructions and tutorials. And Share, that's where you see the largest section of reader layouts and projects(although they are used throughout the magazine). MY RATING - 5 STARS

Creating Keepsakes was one of the
first scrapbooking magazines on the market (they celebrated 10 years in ’06)…and is still a market leader. I do look forward to this magazine every month. However, sometimes it seems like this magazine is a little more heavy on the advertising than the other mags (which takes up 'inspiration' space) and some of the layouts sometimes almost get to the point of being 'overembellished', IMO. MY RATING - 4 STARS
There has been some controversy with Memory Makers as of late. They changed their management, staff, and their entire design and layout...some very unhappy subscribers. I have
to admit, I was also very disappointed with the December 2006 issue. HOWEVER, they have been listening and things are improving. I haven’t gotten my March 2007 issue yet, but from the reviews on their forum, it sounds like their were VAST improvements with this new issue. I will not hesitate to renew my subscription with them. MY RATING - 2 STARS (rating only lower because of the recent issues...if they keep improving, my rating will definitely go back up)
As for Scrapbook Trends, yes, the subscription cost is definitely higher than the others. They
recently had a very steep increase in their subscription costs (before they were about $25 for a year) along with a revamp of their design and layout. This revamp, though, was ALL GOOD, IMO. I also LOVE that they share a little snippet behind each layout - maybe something about the creator, the story behind the layout, or information on a technique used...sometimes a combination of all the above! The issues now have very little advertising and are HEAVY on great inspiration...I would liken it almost more like an IDEA BOOK in a monthly format. So, if you think of it that way, the price doesn’t seem so high…most of us would spend at least $15 for a good idea book…if you subscribe, you’ll only paying about $8 an issue. If you can't justify spending that much yourself, it's a good one to add to your Christmas or Birthday wish list perhaps - you won't regret it! MY RATING - 5 STARS

Laugh, think, and cry - everyday

Post-holiday blues...
I don't know about anybody else, but I am definitely feeling a little bit of the post-holiday blues. The Christmas tree is down, decorations put away, the last of the 'late holiday' get-to-gethers are over.
I ran across this fun quiz that a friend sent me before the holidays and it perked me up a bit. Of course, I didn't have the forwithitness to post it at Christmastime, but better late than never, right!! I am also thinking that this would be great inspiration for a scrapbook page or mini book...or could be used just as it is for a fun form of journaling...hmmm...
1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Hot chocolate
2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? WRAP – but he’s a little behind on his duties this year (nothing is wrapped yet!!) (when originally answered it was only 10 days till Christmas!!)
3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? WHITE
4. Do you hang mistletoe? NO
5. When do you put your decorations up? Thanksgiving Weekend
6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? Can’t pick a favorite…love it all…ham, mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, sweet potatoes, shrimp and veggies for appetizers….mmmmmmmmmmm
7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child: opening presents on Christmas Eve and then going to Midnight Mass (back when it was actually at Midnight); when I was really little - wrapping obscure household items (junk really) for my dad on Christmas morning for my dad – he always acted surprised and like it was the best gift he had ever received
8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? Don’t remember…it must not have been too tramatic
9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? It’s always been Christmas Eve at my house and gifts from Santa on Christmas morning and Justin’s family has always been a Christmas morning family, so now Kaitlin gets a butt load of presents on both Christmas Eve AND Christmas morning…what a lucky girl!
10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree? White lights, burgundy & cream ball ornaments, glass icicles and snowflake ornaments, silver bows and some scattered sentimental ornaments received from family over the years.
11. Snow! Love it or Dread it? Intermediate…love it at Christmas time…but never in large amounts or dangerous conditions
12. Can you ice skate? NO – would probably break my neck!
13. Do you remember your favorite gift? No, but I remember the most memorable gift I DIDN’T get…one year my brother and I did some snooping and found a Smurf’s Color-by-Number set and I was convinced it was mine….but Scott opened it up on Christmas Eve – I was so mad I think I cried!!

simply something like magic...
Trying to get some scrapping done today, but haven't gotten too far yet. This is one of my most recent scrapbook layouts that was inspired by a concert by Matthew Mayer that I attended at Mount Marty College back in November. Seriously, if you ever have the chance to see/hear this guy, he is AWESOME!!! He is from South Dakota and went to California as a young adult to work on his career. Now, he actaully lives in Omaha and plays all over the US. I bought three of his CD's that night - Beyond, Merry Christmas, and Reflections (I especially like the first two). If you are interested in his CD's or tour dates, visit his website. 
It took me awhile to get to this one because I had no photo to go with it, but still really wanted to scrap the memory and the poem I wrote. Well, finally I found a solution...I used a stock photo. I've never done that before and don't plan to do it often, but for this purpose, it worked.
The hidden journaling on the tag is actually an email that I wrote to the performer and his response, which came a couple days later:

This may seem odd, but I just had to share this with you, Matt. I began writing poetry when I was in grade school - 3rd grade, I think. I wrote throughout grade school, high school, and college. Then, for some reason - I can't even say what - I stopped. No life changing event, no catastrophic loss...I have often joked that I 'lost my muse.'
Tonight, after your performance at Mount Marty, I wrote my first poem in over eight years...most of it actually simply 'came' to me as I sat there with my sleeping daughter in my lap and watched you play. You are amazing...Here is my poem - I hope you like it!

I was touched by your email. Thank you for taking the time to share this with me. It is emails like this that keep me motivated as well.
I hope you continue on with your poetry. Your work is beautiful and very touching. You have definitely been given a gift to write like that, and hope you keep going with it. It would be a shame if you didn’t keep exploring that side of you. Your words were very meaningful to me. Thank you for sharing this experience.

I saw the Memory Makers Celebration Gallery on newsstands TODAY!! Hurray!!
It's out...it's out...it's out!! Justin & I stopped at Hy-Vee tonight 'cause he was in the mood to make some fried chicken and there it was! So exciting...So, if you were hoping to get a copy, look for it. Well, anywhere except Hy-Vee in Yankton because I bought the last three copies they had. :-) I promised one to my mom and Ruth wanted the other two.
It will be available online eventually here, but they don't have it listed yet. It will be a little more expensive online (they add in a shipping expense), so if you can find it in a store, that would be cheaper, especially if they offer a discount on mags. Walmart should have them, too, I would think.
Anyway, my pages are on the bottom of pages 33 (with this ring), 55 (birthday fun), and 57 (it's all in the cake)...let me know what you think!!

New Basic Grey fix...and about to experiment with Technique Tuesday
I got my most recent fix of scrapbooking product in the mail the other day from KMA. I got the new Blush Collection by Basic Grey, some stamps from Technique Tuesday and some other little miscellaneous. I really love the BG...no surprise there...I always do. There were certain ones I knew that I would love just as much 'in person' like Angelic and Eternity, but some where even prettier than
they looked online - especially Girlfriend.I have never really been to big into stamping...not sure why, but I really loved the Whirlygig set by TT that I thought that was as good of a set as any to give it a 'whirl' (get it :-)) with. I think I will like these better than wood or foam because with clear stamps you have a little more control over placement. I'm looking forward to playing around with them...

Memory Makers Celebration Gallery...where are you??
So, the new Memory Makers Celebration Gallery Issue is still not out yet. I know I have my copy already, but there is something about knowing that it is actually out on newsstands for all to see that still has me excited...and impatient!!
Well, I had a long break from submitting layouts lately...things have just been so busy, but I got back at it and made about 25 layout submissions to various magazines...we'll see what happens. I really hope that I continue to get a few layouts picked up here and there. Not that my scrapbooking isn't gratifying in and of itself, but it's still nice to have it recognized by others also.
Anyway...still watching for the Celebration Gallery...don't worry...I'll be sure to let you know as soon as I see it!

Did you know that January 10 is National Cut Your Energy Costs Day? Who came up with that?? Maybe I should do a scrapbook page on how you can feel a slight draft by almost every window in our house...not too energy efficient there!!

My first published layouts!
The holidays are over...somehow it seemed to come and go for me so quickly this year. I couldn't bring myself to take down the tree yet, but will have to do it soon I know.
I had about 10 days off from work which was wonderful, but that too went sooo quickly. Didn't get nearly as much 'done' as I had hoped. I thought about doing more house cleaning, but that's just no fun. I did do a little scrapping...here are the layouts I did manage to complete.
HOWEVER, I am really happy with how these two turned out...I had taken some pictures of Kaitlin outside in the backyard with the leaves back in early November and finally got them scraped. I actually used greeting cards as photo mats in both layouts. I always hate to see beautiful cards just go in the trash and these were just perfect for the layouts.
I also completed this layout - FINALLY!! It was a picture I took back in September that I just LOVED - I think I was afraid I wouldn't do it justice, but I think it did turn out well.

I did struggle with these Halloween ones a little, but I didn't want to just skip the pictures as they were cute and had a good story, but they certainly aren't my favorites as far as design and color are concerned...they can't all be favorites though, I suppose!

Christmas was fun with Kaitlin this year...really enjoy celebrating her Santa fantasy!! She wrote the cutest letter to Santa at preschool and it was printed in the local newspaper. The main item requested was a toy Rudolph...and Santa brought her TWO stuffed reindeer...she was quite please.
Definitely the MOST exciting thing for me personally that happened over the break was that I received my layouts back from Memory Makers and 2 comp. copies of the Celebrations Gallery Special Issue. The issue should hit newsstands in a week or two. I was sooo gratifying to see my pages in print for the first time!! Hopefully, it won't be the last; however, it has been so busy lately, I haven't submitted any pages for quite some time...I definitely need to get back at that!
It was back to work yesterday...the day went pretty quickly, thank goodness. It is going to be a busy couple of weeks before the start of the spring term. I hope to register at least five more students, but seem to keep running into roadblocks with student issues...hopefully, we can get them resolved in time. There are always new challenges with this job, that's for sure.

Definitely the MOST exciting thing for me personally that happened over the break was that I received my layouts back from Memory Makers and 2 comp. copies of the Celebrations Gallery Special Issue. The issue should hit newsstands in a week or two. I was sooo gratifying to see my pages in print for the first time!! Hopefully, it won't be the last; however, it has been so busy lately, I haven't submitted any pages for quite some time...I definitely need to get back at that!
It was back to work yesterday...the day went pretty quickly, thank goodness. It is going to be a busy couple of weeks before the start of the spring term.
