Trip down memory lane...

I'm not sure how it started, but last night at the dinner table we started down memory lane and were talking about all the cute little things that Kaitlin used to do...

...like scooting across the floor so that she could make music with the spring door stopper

...and then when she was a little bigger she used to crawl into the space beneath the TV in our entertainment center and 'peak' at anyone willing to pay attention to her (see blast-from-my-scrapbooking-past layout below...

(This is a rare peak at my very first scrapbook - created in 2002. Most scrappers have heard of 'sticker sneeze'. Well, this is an example of one of my early, and highly innovative, scrapbooking techniques called 'photo sneeze'...how things have changed!)

...and then when she starting talking, the first thing she said was 'mama' (which referred to both Mommy & Daddy until she was about eighteen months old - didn't make Daddy happy, by the way)

...and then her speech got much better, but had a little trouble with some words like yellow and elephant and we enjoyed endless hours of entertainment by asking her to say yellow elephant which came out 'lellow ephalent'

We ended up watching some home video later that evening with snippets of us in the hospital waiting for her arrival and the first couple months of Kaitlin's life and a couple things really stood out to me:

One - I'm somewhat amazed that I even allowed him to tape me while in the hospital...I looked horrible - especially towards the end of my 27 1/2 hours of labor. It must have been the drugs...I was smiling most of the time...yes, it was most definitely the drugs.

Two - The whole time that we are in the hospital after Kaitlin's birth, she never cried once on video...she was this sweet, sleeping little bundle of perfection.

Three - Then we brought her home...and in every snippet thereafter she is, at least at some point, screaming her little lungs out.

At that point, I leaned over a said to Kaitlin (who has been quite intrigued the whole time as she has never seen this particular video before), "How come at the hospital you were so sweet and quite and when we brought you home all you did was cry?"

She then proceeded to give me 'the eye'.

For a five year old, she is quite adept at 'the eye'.

"I think we might just have brought home the wrong baby from the hospital," I said. "Maybe we should check into that."

"Mooooooom!"

Four - In every snippet that involved Justin, he was picking on her in some way...tickling her or pulling at her eyelids when she was sleeping, making fun of her smelly diapers...and in every snippet that I was involved in I was snuggling her or trying to get her to 'tell me a story' by talking to her in that high-pitched baby talk (which all mothers seem to instantly revert to upon having a child and, yes, I admit, is quite annoying...sorry).

However, Kaitlin's response to that was, "Mommy, you are such a nice mommy."

Well, maybe I won't check into that baby switch thing after all.

CHA Winter 2008 sneak peaks...

I've been watching the sneak peaks that many of the manufacturers have been posting in the last couple of week in preparation for the CHA Winter 2008 show coming up February 10-13.

I have to say, there doesn't seem to be quite as much that I am just 'oohing and ahhing' over this time around...which is probably good because I certainly still have plenty in my stash left to use anyway.

Then, I saw Karen Russell's sneak peak post this morning and that was all over!

If you like this...you should check out her post - there is even more to this beautiful new line of additions to her Narratives collections.

A layout and a little shelf cleaning...

A LAYOUT:
Here's a layout I finished recently with pictures from our late summer trip to Omaha last year.

LAYOUT TITLE: {heartland of America park}

Supplies:
Cardstock: Bazzill
Patterned Paper: American Crafts
Letter Stickers: Mrs. Elizabeth’s
Pen: Sakura
Corner Rounder: Marvy
Adhesive: Duck

Comments & Techniques:The striped patterned paper mimic the rainbow in the main picture and also create a visual triangle on the page.

SOME SHELF CLEANING:
There are definitely pros and cons to having a limited scrapbook space...a pro is that I have to go through my stuff periodically and purge so I don't overflow...a con is that I have to go through my stuff periodically and purge! :-)

This weekend it was my bookshelf...it was overflowing!

If you're interested in a bunch of great inspiration at a low price, check out the scrapbooking book and special issue magazines I posted today in my eBay store.

Good reads and great mail...

GOOD READS:
I'm not reading as much as I used to these days (other than scrapbooking mags and idea books, that is), but when I read Mary Lawson's Crow Lake last year I knew I had found a writer I loved. If you'd like, you can see what I had to say about that book here. It was her first book, so had to wait for a second.

The Other Side of the Bridge was published late last August, but I just purchased it recently and finished it just the other night. It is similar to her first book in a couple ways. It is again set in Canada and also weaves together two time periods through its main characters.

This book follows brothers Arthur and Jake in the 1930's and Ian in the late-50's, early 60's and it is amazing how she entwines the plots of these character together without becoming confusing or giving away too much/too little of the final outcome in the process. I am a sucker for good historical fiction and Mary Lawson can write it!

I hope another book comes sooner...there was a five year gap between her first book and this one. I'll be waiting for another, Mary!

GREAT MAIL:
I received another party order in the mail for MemoryWorks yesterday. There just nothing like getting a HUGE box of scrapbooking supplies...too bad 95% of it wasn't mine. I was drooling the whole time I was going through everything and getting the orders all divided up to deliver to the party hostess.

I did get a couple fun items though like this the new Kiss & Tell kit from My Mind's Eye:

So glad I snatched that one up before they went out of stock...not sure if they will be getting more or not.

Also got the Be Good Chipboard Alpa set from Cosmo Cricket:

The picture doesn't quite do them justice...basically a red capital alpha set with these white swirls running through them...really neat.

And...these Daisy D's rub-on tapes that I've been eying for awhile - the Fancy Border and the Straight Stitch:

Can't wait to try them all out!!

I've been keeping up with my layout a week resolution...will be sharing another layout soon.

REVIEW: The Organized & Inspired Scrapbooker by Wendy Smedley & Aby Garvey

The Organized & Inspired Scrapbooker by Wendy Smedley and Aby Garvey is certainly a different kind of idea book with an entirely different type of eye candy.

Usually the books I read and review here in relation to scrapbooking involve a plethora of product, design, theme, color and/or journaling ideas in relation to the creation of scrapbook layouts. This book has none of those...at least not in the same context.

It certainly does have product, theme, color and more, but it the context of the 'space' in which one scraps. The eye candy in this book are scrapbooking spaces and storage solutions themselves!

Wendy and Aby divided the book into three sections. The first section deals with discovering your 'process' which, in turn, helps you discover the organization of space and supplies that will help you to be as efficient as possible in your crafting endeavours. It includes the following chapters:

1 - Getting Organized
2 - Getting Inspired
3 - Approach
4 - Photos
5 - Memorabilia
6 - Stories
7 - Products
8 - Tools
9 - References

I was aware of all the various creative processes and storage solutions, but honestly had never given them much thought before in terms of how it could help (or hinder) my creative process. After reading this section, I did do a significant purge and reorganization in my scrapbooking area and can already tell a difference in my creative output.

The second section focuses on determining what type of space will work or is available to you for crafting, how to use what you've learned in section 1 to put it all together and spotlights the creative spaces of some 'professional' scrappers. This section includes the following chapters:

10 - Planning Your Space
11 - Creating Your Space
12 - Beth Proudfoot
13 - Kelly Jeppson
14 - Kelli Crowe
15 - Renee Pearson
16 - Stacey Julian

My only gripe about this section is that it does highlight spaces that I will most likely never be able to have - in other words a dedicated scrap/craft room. Right now, my scrap area in a L-shaped desk area in the middle of our basement family/exercise/computer/husband's junk room...in other words, I'm working with what this book would refer to as a 'shared' space and I've got to make that work. Only one of the artists above works with something other than a dedicated room and that is Kelly Jeppson who works with a temporary space - her kitchen table.

The third section includes two parts: Projects (which are basically mini-assignments to jump start your organizational process) and References.

Also included with this book is a separate workbook with questionnaires on Chapters 1 - 11 that further help you to determine your needs and style.

Overall, I did find this book very helpful in determining what personal scrapping process and what storage solutions would best fit the bill. I spent a lot of time drooling over the set up that some very lucky woman have...and they certainly inspired me to continue to improve my space over time.

MY RATING:
4 1/2 STARS

Oh, sweet nibblets!

My little girl is definitely growing up!

The days of Clifford, Arthur, Dragon Tales, and even George being the 'go-to' favorite shows have past. Sorry PBS. Kaitlin has moved on.

She has moved on to Disney and Nickelodeon to the likes of Suite Life of Zach & Cody, Drake & Josh and Hannah Montana...especially Hannah Montana! These aren't even cartoons!! They're 'big kid' shows...and she LOVES them!

Even her vocabulary has changed.

Almost everything these days is 'AWESOME' or 'SWEET'!

And over the past few days, I've noticed a new phrase has made it's way into her everyday conversations. To illustrate:

I might be worried about this insurgence of 'big kid' pop culture in my 5-year-old daughter, if it wasn't just so darn cute when she says it.

The plague of the false alarms…

My husband has to be to work by 6 a.m. He is not, nor never has been, a morning person. And he sleeps like the dead. So, every morning his cell phone alarm goes off at about 5 a.m. He has no real intention of getting up at that time as he pretty much just throws on some cloths, brushes his teeth and leaves, but this early alarm is supposed to help him ‘start to wake up’.

It doesn’t work. He sleeps right through it, but it always wakes me up, so it usually involves me having to shake him awake to ask him to shut it off.

This morning’s ‘false alarm’ routine was a little different than usual, so thought I would share.

This morning it woke up Kaitlin who, luckily, usually sleeps right through it all. (If only I could be so lucky.) She came in our bedroom before I had mustered the energy to shake Justin away.

“Daaaad! You phone is ringing and it’s really loud.”

To which he mumbled something and shifted.

“Daaaadddd!”

A gruff and faint, “Hmmm…”

“Dad, shut that thing off! Some people are trying to sleep!”

To which he finally reached over and shut it off. And, of course, he didn’t get up. So, now that Kaitlin was completely awake, she wanted to crawl in with us and commenced to jabber about what she wanted to wear to school today and such.

Once she got settled, I said, “It’s time to go back to sleep.”

“I love you, Mom. I love you, Dad. Good night.”

About ten minutes pass…and, as always, the cell phone alarm goes off again.

“Daaaaad, it’s you phone AGAIN!”

His reponse was a little quicker this time, but not much…and, no, he still did get up.

About five minutes pass…and, as always, his clock radio, which he recently moved to our dresser so that it would force him to get up and out of bed to shut it off, starts blaring some horrid country twang.

UGH! Now it’s his radio, Mom. What is he doing to us!” I’m with ya babe…this is what I live with EVERY MORNING. “Daaaaad…go shut off your radio!”

Slowly…he rolls out of bed…shuts of the radio…and rolls BACK INTO BED!

And let me tell you, he actually goes back to sleep in between every one of these alarms…his snoring often proves. Me (and Kaitlin on this particular morning), on the other hand, are awake the whole time.

Then, about 5 minutes later (we’re now at about 5:25 a.m.) my radio alarm (tuned to a more pleasant morning melody and acceptable volume level) goes off and this is the cue to kick him out of bed (sometimes almost literally).

This morning as Justin was getting dressed in the dark, Kaitlin said, “I love you guys…now good night.” And she rolled over into Justin’s spot.

I’m glad she’s still feeling the love, ‘cause I'm usually NOT after Justin’s daily rendition of false alarms. I’ve asked, begged and pleaded for him to just cut out the first three alarms since he NEVER gets up anyway, but he seems to take pleasure in knowing that I lay there awake from the first ring at 5 a.m. every morning.

What a way to start every day!! At least Kaitlin made it a little more humorous this morning.

Busy times and fun stuff in the mailbox...

This past week has sure been a busy one at work and home.

Our new semester started this Monday, so the week leading up to and following a start of a semester are always a bit of a whirlwind with last minute preparations with students. It sure keeps things interesting though.

Last Friday my friend Julie hosted a MemoryWorks party at her house and it went VERY well! She earned $45 in free product through her sales, plus a $10 hostess gift. It was a great party, too! A great way to relax after a long week.

Saturday was a marathon laundry day and Kaitlin had play practice from 3-7 p.m. That's a long time for a 5-year-old, but she seemed pretty happy about it when I picked her up. We'll see what she thinks of it after two months of practices...

Sunday Kaitlin and I headed to Sioux Falls for a bridal show with my mom and sister. She got some great ideas for a few of the things she has left to plan like her cake, programs and invitations. We also fit in a trip to Michael's for some scrapbook shopping, of course! It was a fun girl's day out.

This week at work has been a lot of follow up with all my students to make sure they're doing okay and have all their stuff completed and turned in to finalize enrollment...busy, busy.

I've got to find some time for scrapping, too, this week not only to keep my resolution, but also to use some of the fun stuff I got in the mail this past week like these WONDERFUL papers from the Making Memories Noteworthy line...

This cute little journaling notebook...

And a bunch of KI Memories lace cardstock...

A granny-walker saved my life...

Last Sunday, we took my niece, Emily to the rink down the street for a birthday party her friend was having there and we all decided to give ice skating a go.

Let me just say, I never learned how to roller skate (at least not well) and this was the first time in my life that I'd ever even had ice skates on my feet...Kaitlin's first time, too.

This difference between us, it seems, is that she has NO fear! Me, on the other hand, have never had a broken bone (yes, lucky, I know) and don't really have any desire to get one at this point in my life.

There is probably a more 'technical' term for them, but they had these 'granny-walkers' there for people who had no idea what they were doing (that's us) to help them stay upright. We weren't the only ones using them, so it wasn't too embarrassing.

Here's Kaitlin with my sister. She wanted to ditch the walker many times, but I wouldn't let her. She still fell from time to time and I don't think she quite understood how much it was breaking the fall.

Then, as I was struggling my way around the rink with my granny-walker, this very nice girl glided by and took pity on this little girl whose mother was obviously of no help to her.

"Can I push you daughter around the rink?" she asked.

The sparkle in Kaitlin's eye answered the question and off they went...

I went around the rink a few times, but gave up pretty quickly...the rental skates are kind of like bowling shoes - ugly (not the main issue) and NOT comfortable (main issue - my feet HURT)!

But Kaitlin just kept going around and around and around...not with very good technique, mind you, but she made it just the same and she was NOT a happy camper when it was time to leave.

I checked into lessons and they are offering the last session of the year, but it meets three times per week and I was afraid that would be just too much considering her practice schedule for the play will start to pick up beginning today - she has a 4-hour practice this afternoon!

We'll have to keep it in mind for her next year and try to get her into an earlier session.

Sledding in the New Year...

On New Year's Eve we went sledding. There wasn't a whole lot of shelter from the wind where we were at so it was pretty cold.

Kaitlin started to make the trek up the hill with her cousins, Emily & Rachel...

but soon discovered there was a better way.

By the time they finally got up there, they all needed a rest!

The best part of sledding...is watching other people take the spills at the bottom!

Oh, it looks like that one hurt, Emmy. Don't worry...she still had a smile on her face when she got up.

Then, she was ready to take a run with Kaitlin...

Kaitlin was definitely the best bundled of all of us...it didn't take long before I was cold enough that I wanted to head home, but Kaitlin would have stayed all day if we had let her!

Kaitlin especially loved going down on her daddy's back.

Did you know that photographing sledders can be quite dangerous...especially when your husband seems out to take the photographer down!

REVIEW: Life Artist by Ali Edwards

I've never purchased an Ali Edwards book before (she has two previous to this one). Basically, I didn't feel that her 'style' fit my 'style', so how could I be inspired by her, right?

I would describe her style as artsier than my own with elements of collaging, mis-matched letters, random paint swooshes. I tend to be more linear and I like my letters to match. I never even used paint because it was too unpredictable.

Well, after reading more and more of her columns in CK, I discovered that although my style may be different for her own, her ideas and her drive for scrapbooking were inspiring to me.

So, I purchased her book, Life Artist, and will let you know what I thought.

Within minutes of sitting down, I knew that I was going to LOVE this book! I almost instantly felt a connection with her in terms of what started it all.

"I began scrapbooking in 2002...I had been hunting for a baby book-a cool, modern baby book in which to tell his story-and had been unsuccessful in that search."
~Ali Edwards
I, too, began scrapping in 2002 - shortly before the birth of my daughter - and couldn't find a baby book I liked. I thought, "Oh well, I'll just make one." Little did I know what I was getting myself into!

Then, I read this on page 11:

"Scrapbooking became my outlet. My way of dealing with all the changes in my life. My way of dealing with my emotions. Through the photos I took, I was able to see (literally see) how really amazing and lucky and blessed I was. Scrapbooking helped me take a look at the life I was living. It helped me make changes that would positively affect my life experience."
~ Ali Edwards
This is exactly how I feel about this hobby (turned obsession) of mine!

It also so happens that my current FAVORITE journaling font is Susie's Hand, a font fashioned after Ali's own handwriting.

She divided that book into 8 chapters, the first seven of which are basically her scrapbooking 'mantras':

*It is okay
*Go with the flow
*Simplify
*Celebrate the everyday
*Take a risk...& play
*Embrace imperfection
*Find your own voice & tell your story

Within each of these chapters, she give numerous examples of how she lives these practices through her scrapbooking!

Her final chapter, Life Art Workshop, includes assignments to help her readers embrace these mantras in their own scrapping.

The work included in this edition are all Ali's - 63 layouts and over a dozen very detailed and inspiring mini books.

One that I found especially inspiring was a mini book created by connecting a pack of 4x6 alpha-tabbed index cards with jump rings. She titled it 'little things'.

I have already purchased the cards, rings and have assembled the book. My plan is to add pictures from 2008 as they come along to match the letter. For example, 'E' might end up with a picture of my daughter finding Easter eggs, 'P' might tell the story of our visit to the pumpkin patch in the fall, etc.

I've never really gotten into mini books before, but this one has me excited...it's just so simple and quick, yet what a wonderful way to look back on a year! Thanks, Ali!

She also talked about the ebb and flow of the creative cycle which really resonated with me. This past year, I had a couple 2-3 month periods where I scrapped NOTHING...and felt so bad about it. This helped me to see that I'm not the only scrapbooker that experiences this and that it's a natural part of being creative.

Ali also fed the inspiration junkie in me. At the back of her book, she has a list of over 50 different recommended books, magazines, websites, blogs and online challenges for finding further inspiration. Some I had heard of, but most not, and I had a great time exploring these new gems.

In case you haven't already guessed my rating on this book....

MY RATING:
5 STARS...ALL THE WAY, BABY!

I LOVE my Clip it Up!

I got Christmas in the mail again yesterday. With some of the money that I got from my dad and my in-laws for Christmas (thanks Dad...thanks Ruth & Rahn) I ordered one of the scrapbooking storage items that I have been wanting for awhile - the Clip it Up!!

When it comes to my scrapbooking, I've always liked to be able to 'see' my products. Sometimes when they're packed away in binders or boxes (as many of them have been for a long time), I simply forget that I have them - or can't find them - when I want to use them.
The Clip it Up system is a simple and surprisingly compact solution to this problem!! I love it!! And it fits neatly on this little shelf I got to go between my inspiration board and my storage cabinet.

I don't know if you can tell, but I've pretty got all my stickers, alphabets, chipboard and other miscellaneous items on there and it's not even close to being full...hmmm...guess I need to do some more shopping!! :-)
If you've wanting a new organizational system, but didn't know what to get or even been considering the Clip it Up, I definitely recommend it. I will admit, it is a little spendy, but it can totally replace so many other things you might be using...and is just plain more efficient!
So, this just goes along with my New Year's Resolution. In order to be more productive in my scrapping this year, I really did need to get more organized and now I am.
My sister and niece are coming over any minute and we're going to have a scrap night!! I'm so excited!

11 days...where did they go?

I had 11 days off from work for the holidays. It sounds like SO much, yet it went so very quickly!

We spent a lot of time with family and friends which was wonderful...always enjoy the family time.

I also did quite a bit of scrapping. I think I completed about 12-13 layouts total. I am now only about 4 1/2 months behind versus the 6 1/2 I was before the break...still have a ways to go, but the creative juices have been flowing lately, so I hope that continues.

This is the furthest behind I've ever been in my scrapping. This past year, I had a couple periods where I scrapped NOTHING for 2-3 months at a time and that's what really did the damage.

I think is was a combination of waining mojo, being extremely busy, not making enough effort to make time for my hobby (other than reading mags and idea books) and then feeling daunted by that BIG stack of photos!

So, my New Year's resolution this year (and this is big for me because I don't usually even bother making them) is to create AT LEAST one layout every week.

I may not be in the mood...I may not LOVE the end result, but I think it's important to find time for creativity in life - and this is the outlet that allows me to be creative.

There is always that sense of accomplishment for me, too, when I look at a completed layout. It's a good feeling...a memory preserved, thoughts recorded, pictures given a place to shine.

To help me reach this goal, I am going to print out a calendar each month to hang on my inspiration book in my scrapbooking area and every time I complete (not just start) a layout, a tick mark will go on that date.

I'm good for this week...I did four layouts on Tuesday (my last day of vacation) and two of those were two-page spreads!!

Here's one of the layouts I completed during the break:

Supplies:
Cardstock: Bazzill
Rub ons: Making Memories
Font: Susie’s Hand
Pen: Sakura
Corner Rounder: Marvy
Ink: Colorbox

Journaling:
Kaitlin spent a lot of time at the kiddie pool this summer...a great place to beat the heat! On this day, her preschool buddie, Jonah, was also there and they had a great time ‘catching’ up.

Comments & Techniques:
I am generally NOT a doodler…this is like the second layout I’ve ever done it on. I am always too scared of messing it up, but this layout just really seemed to be ‘missing’ something before I added the white doodling around the scalloped circle and also the corner accents. This layout may just be the beginning of much doodling…I LOVE the effect that it has.

So, did you have any scrapbooking or photography related New Year's resolutions this year? I'd love to hear them...I might have to add a few to my list!
