:QUOTES: on TEACHERS according to Einstein, Garrison & Ward

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week coming up next week (May 2-6, 2011), I've got three wonderful quotes on teachers for you to vote on this week.

ALBERT EINSTEIN (1875-1955; theoretical physicist, philosopher):
"It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.”

EVER GARRISON:
“A teacher is a compass that activates the magnets of curiosity, knowledge, and wisdom in the pupils.”

WILLIAM ARTHER WARD:
“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.”

READER RESPONSE:
Vote for your favorite quote and I'll create a word art freebie with the 'winning' quote to share with you sometime next week. In the meantime, check out my other word art downloads.

:LAYOUT: One of my favorite things

I didn’t really have a photo to go along with this story, so I simply ordered a print of the DVD cover.

The floral paper and vintage-style brands work so well with the time frame of the musical and the colors are perfect as well.

THREE THINGS TO TRY:
1. Use a combination of a decorative rub on and two different styles of alphabet stickers to create your title treatment.
2. Type your journaling and insert a drop cap for a classic look.
3. Use decorative brads to break up blocks of journaling.

Journaling:
I can’t tell you exactly when I first saw the film The Sound of Music with Julie Andrews as Maria, but I can tell you that ever since I did, it’s been one of my favorite musicals of all time. There is just something about Maria and this classic and just makes me want to sing!

Around Christmas 2009, I saw the DVD on sale and thought it was about time that I shared this favorite with Kaitlin, then 7 years old.

So, on one of our days off, we snuggled up together and watched.

Like mother, like daughter…Kaitlin now loves The Sound of Music as well. We’ve watched it a few times together since them and it’s not uncommon to find her humming of singing one of the songs. “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” seems to be her favorite…which is appropriate as it seems as if she is seven going on sixteen a lot of the time!

Hopefully, there will be many other little favorites such as The Sound of Music that we can share and enjoy together as we go through life together.

Supplies:
Cardstock: Prism
Patterned Paper: Fancy Pants, Making Memories
Rub ons: Basic Grey
Letter Stickers: Making Memories, October Afternoon
Brads: Making Memories
Gems: Paper Studio

:LINKS: A few random items from around the web...

Here's a few random favorites that I've discovered in my recent web adventures...

This is an simple and low-cost project with amazing results. The best thing about it is that the contents can be changed to suit any holiday or season.

My collection of unread books is growing...these adorable (and foxy) bookmarks make me want to get reading!

Kaitlin's favorite colors right now are blue and green and I find myself drawn to them as well! I LOVE these colors and distressed patterns. Beautiful!

I'm probably the last to discover this, but I'm having a BLAST pinning the things that inspire me on the web!

I'm inspired to start creating more printable art and Aimee of Sprik Space has certainly been part of the inspiration behind that new desire. If you like this one, be sure to check out her site for dozens more!

I LOVE magazines! I always have a pile of them around and, honestly, I have been trying to ween myself off a few of them because I just didn't have time to look at them all and it was creating too much clutter. Then, I discovered THIS!! Beautiful...and all on line. If you follow my monthly Be Inspired Creativity Prompts, you know that I am quite inspired by advertising and this publication is full of inspiration.

LET'S TALK:
What's your favorite link above and why?

:QUOTES: on EARTH according to Carson, Gibran, Keats & Lubbock

I endeavored to find three quotes in honor of of our lovely planet as Earth Day is Friday, April 22nd and found so many that I loved that I couldn't seem to limit myself to my usual three.

So, here are my favorite four.

RACHEL CARSON:
"Those who dwell among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life."

KAHLIL GIBRAN:
"Forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair."

JOHN KEATS:
"The poetry of the earth is never dead."

JOHN LUBBOCK:
"Earth and sky, woods and fields, lakes and rivers, the mountain and the sea, are excellent schoolmasters, and teach some of us more than we can ever learn from books."

:REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: The Elemental Journal by Tammy Kushnir [CONTEST CLOSED]

The Elemental Journal: Composing Artful Expressions from Items Cast AsideThe Elemental Journal: Composing Artful Expressions from Items Cast Aside by Tammy Kushnir is certainly a lesson in giving something old new life again!

Amazon.com description:
"Rusty doorknobs, cardboard containers and plastic packaging may seem like trash to some, but through the creative mind, they are transformed into beautiful expressions - equally parts artful book and assemblage. The Elemental Journal will show you how to craft a wide variety of journals to hold your secrets or express your inner thoughts, and discover new ways to use wood, paper, fabric, plastic and metal in your art."

Within the pages of this book, there are 30 featured projects that are a feast for the eyes by inspirational mixed-media artists such as Jill Berry, Tonia Davenport, Sarah Fishburn, Judith Hoffman, Karen Michel, Geraldine Newfry, Jen Osborn, Kristen Robinson, Susan Tuttle, and, of course, the author herself.

In case you're new to this type of crafting, Kushnir starts off the book with an introduction on the materials and tools that are par for the course.

Fifteen of the featured projects include step-by-step photo tutorials that show you exactly how to recreate to the look for yourself as well as numerous favorite tips from the artists throughout the book for creating this type of mix-media art.

Now, anyone who follows my blog knows that this style of crafting isn't really my style. And, honestly, I don't expect that I'll be rushing into my backyard to find tree bark to use as a mini-book cover anytime soon.

HOWEVER, as an artist in my own right, I do believe that inspiration can be found everywhere, just as the author states in her introduction:

"Throughout this book you will feast on projects that will hopefully aid you in your search for inspiration. You will find it in various sources, both external and internal. Personal battles and triumphs will be explored in imagery and writing in an attempt to drew your own experiences to the surface. None of us are unscathed and no one is beyond attaining bliss. Our deepest feelings are often overlooked, just as many of the castaway objects used in these journals are. However, once you discover them and really examine them, you will see something you never did before. You will find acceptance for yourself in your art-in-progress."

With that said, I DID find several material uses and techniques that I do hope to use on a, perhaps, smaller scale such as a wonderful technique for journaling on fabric, using pockets from discarded clothing, printing photos on transparencies and more.

If you are already an avid mixed-media artist and are looking for some new inspiring ideas, then this book is for you!

If you have not yet dipped into this wonderful realm of artistry, but are a lover of flea markets, yard sales and have a hard time letting go of found treasures, then this book might be just for you, too, so that you can start creating beautiful treasures that anyone can appreciate.

GIVEAWAY:
Now one lucky reader has a chance to get their hands of a free copy of The Elemental Journal! All you have to do is answer the following question by 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 21st, 2011.

What is the most unusual type of memorabilia or found item that you've used in your crafting?

Random.org will choose and I will announce the lucky winner on Friday!

GOOD LUCK!!
